Online guidance underestimates live variance. Large fields with flat payouts produce downswings measured in dozens of buy-ins, and every live buy-in carries an invisible travel cost. Working rules: cap any single event at 2% of bankroll for recreational players and 5% for professionals with a second income, and count flights and hotels as part of the buy-in when you calculate ROI. Track it in one ledger, in one base currency, or you will not notice a losing year until it is over.
